Remotely Installing an eSIM Using the Bootstrap Profile
eSIM-Capable Teltonika Devices
Applies to: Any Teltonika device with eSIM capability that does not yet have a physical SIM, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi connection in place
Every eSIM-capable device leaves the factory with a small bootstrap eSIM profile already installed (see the Understanding the "Bootstrap eSIM Profile Detected" Message guide). This bootstrap profile provides limited mobile connectivity of its own, and that connectivity is enough on its own to install a full eSIM profile. This means a device does not need a physical SIM fitted, or a wired or Wi-Fi connection made, before its eSIM can be installed and configured.
Because of this, an eSIM-capable device can have its eSIM set up entirely without anyone needing to be on site, whether that is the customer doing it themselves or Jola supporting them remotely.
There are two ways to reach the device's web interface to carry out the steps below.
● If someone is on site: connect a laptop to the device directly, using Ethernet or its Wi-Fi where available, and browse to its local address to log in, as with any other configuration change.
● Without anyone on site: because the bootstrap profile gives the device its own limited mobile connectivity as soon as it is powered on, it can connect to RMS on its own, even before a physical SIM is fitted or a wired connection is made. Once it appears in RMS, its web interface can be reached remotely using RMS's remote access feature, without needing to visit the site. See the Access Devices Remotely guide for the general steps for reaching a device this way.
1. Log into the router's web interface, reached either locally or via RMS remote access as above, and go to Network → Mobile → General.
2. Select the eSIM tab (shown as SIM2 (eSIM1) on devices with one physical SIM slot and one eSIM).
Network → Mobile → General, showing the Default SIM toggle under SIM management for the eSIM (Teltonika RUTX50 documentation).
3. Switch Default SIM to on, then save and apply the changes. This must be done before the eSIM profile can be downloaded in the next section.
1. Go to Network → Mobile → eSIM.
Network → Mobile → eSIM, showing the Add new eSIM profile panel (Teltonika RUTX50 documentation).
2. Under Add new eSIM profile, enter the activation code supplied by Jola, or use Browse to upload the activation QR code instead.
3. Optionally give the profile a name to help identify it later, for example the site or SIM number.
4. Click Download and wait for the device to fetch and install the profile. This may take a little longer than usual, as the bootstrap profile only provides limited connectivity.
1. Go to the Status page and confirm the eSIM profile shows as connected, with a live mobile connection.
● This guide covers a device that does not yet have another connection in place. If the device already has a physical SIM, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi connected, the general Installing an eSIM and Setting It as the Primary Connection guide covers the same steps.
● eSIM is only present on specific hardware variants of a model, not on every unit sold under that model name. This should be checked on the specific device before assuming the feature is available.
● The activation code or QR code supplied by Jola is single-use. Once installed on a device, the same code cannot be used again on a different device.
● The bootstrap profile's connectivity is intended only for downloading a new eSIM profile, and is not meant to be used as an ongoing connection. Once the full eSIM profile is installed and set as the default SIM, the device switches over to using it as normal.
