Changing the Router's Admin Login and Gateway IP Address

What this is

The gateway IP address is the local address used to reach the device's web interface, for example 192.168.1.1. The admin username and password are the login details used once that address is reached. Both are left at their factory defaults on a Jola-supplied device, and both can be changed if needed, for example to fit an existing addressing scheme on site or to meet an internal security policy.

These are two separate settings, changed in different places, and this guide covers each in turn.

Changing the admin password

1. Log into the router's web interface and go to System → Administration → General.

2. Under User Settings, find the "admin" user configuration panel.

3. Enter the current password, then the new password twice to confirm, and click Save & Apply.

4. The dice icon next to the New password field can be used to generate a random password automatically, if preferred.

Changing the gateway IP address

This is a more advanced change than the others in this guide. Changing the gateway IP address changes the address of the router itself on its own local network, so the current browser session will disconnect as soon as it is applied, and the device must be reached again at the new address afterwards. If you are not confident making this change, or the device is being managed remotely, contact Jola support first.

1. Log into the router's web interface and go to Network → LAN.

2. Click Edit on the lan interface.

3. Under General Settings, change the IPv4 address field to the new address required, then click Save & Apply.

4. Reconnect to the device using the new address. Any other devices on the network that pick up their address automatically (DHCP) will also need to reconnect, as their address range moves along with the router's.

Good to know

●       Changing the admin password does not affect the gateway IP address, and changing the gateway IP address does not affect the admin password. They can be changed independently, in any order.

●       The built-in "admin" account's username cannot be renamed. If a different username is specifically needed, a new user with its own username can be added instead, under the same User Settings section using Add New User.

●       If the device becomes unreachable after a change, for example because the new gateway IP address was mistyped, the Factory Reset guide covers how to return the device to its default settings using the physical reset button.

●       By default, a new password must be at least 8 characters long and include both upper and lower case letters and at least one digit. These requirements can be adjusted under the Password Policy section if needed.
